The great Sam Simon, who wrote for Taxi, Cheers, and It’s Garry Shandling’s Show before co-developing The Simpsons with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, died on Sunday after a long battle with colon cancer. He was 59 years old. TMZ notes that Simon was surrounded by his family and his dog (he was an animal rights advocate and gave away millions to shelters and vet clinics) when he passed away in his Los Angeles home.

The Sam Simon Foundation tells us, “For those of us who knew him, his voice will forever echo in our minds; his sense of humor will continue to make us laugh; and his compassion and generosity will continue to impact our lives.” (Via)

Simon, who left The Simpsons in 1993, was instrumental in cementing the show’s voice, and he assembled the original writing staff, including comedy geniuses Al Jean, Mike Reiss, George Meyer, and John Swartzwelder. Plus, he created and designed many fan favorites, including Mr. Burns and Bleeding Gums Murphy. Here’s hoping he’s hanging out with Billie Holiday.
