The Great Rik Mayall, Star Of ‘The Young Ones,’ Has Died

Your gateway into British sitcoms should begin with three shows: Fawlty Towers, The Office, and The Young Ones, which followed the lives of students at Scumbag College and gave rise to the dumb term “alternative comedy,” whatever that means. It’s absolutely brilliant, which is why I’m sad to report that one of the show’s stars, Rik Myall, who played “People’s Poet” Rick, has died at the age of 56.

The actor, who was married with three children, died at home in London.

A statement from Mayall’s management, Brunskill, said: “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Rik Mayall who passed away this morning. We will be issuing a further statement in the fullness of time.” (Via)
