The first episode of Fox’s breakout hit Empire was watched by 9.9 million people. A solid number, but still two million behind its lead-in, American Idol. In week two, however, Empire improved to 10.32, while Idol slipped to 10.87. In week three, Empire, 11.07; Idol, 11.76. Last night was the seventh episode of Lee Daniels and Danny Strong’s hip-hop drama, and ratings have gone up every single week. That’s “unprecedented” for a network series.

Empire continued its seemingly impossible climb Wednesday night, hitting 13.8 million viewers and a 5.3 rating among adults 18-49. Not only does that mark seven weeks of audience growth, but that demo rating is the highest for a regularly scheduled telecast of a broadcast network drama series in five years – since an episode of Grey’s Anatomy in 2010. So that’s 13.8 million for Empire. American Idol? 10.18. Keith Urban ain’t got nothing on Cookie.
