The chief complaint about this year’s Emmys, besides the ceremony airing at the same time as Breaking Bad: the nominees are too good, that the voters got it too right. That’s according to a CNN article entitled, “Does anyone care about the Emmys?” which answers itself by its mere existence. Here are the main takeaways:
Why do the 65th Primetime Emmys feel so…meh?
One reason is the same-old, same-old factor: that the Emmys tend to nominate the same shows (or the same types of shows) every year, says longtime awards watcher Tom O’Neil of Goldderby.com.
Grantland’s TV critic, Andy Greenwald, adds a corollary to O’Neil’s observation. Nowadays, there’s so much worthwhile programming out there that the Emmys, even when nominating good shows, feel safe, and conservative — and, therefore, somewhat dull. (Via)
I don’t agree with this line of reasoning (should Top of the Lake NOT have been nominated?), but I want to help those who do. Below are 10 categories the Emmys should add for next year, with examples from this season, to spice things up a little and make the proceedings more Internet-friendly. In other words: MORE BOYD, PLEASE.
